The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday criticised the U.S. government’s suspension of several IT firms from the Green Card programme, saying the move does not advance the shared ambitions of India and the United States.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the suspension of PERM applications — a key step in the permanent residency process — does not directly affect H‑1B visa holders or their dependents, but could impact the Green Card eligibility of employees working in affected companies.
“The suspension of PERM applications does not, by itself, affect the validity of existing H‑1B visas or the status of H‑1B visa holders and their dependents, though there could be some impact on the permanent‑residency process,” the ministry said.
The MEA also responded to remarks by U.S. Vice‑President J.D. Vance, describing his “characterisations as unwarranted.” Officials emphasised that India remains committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation in technology, innovation, and workforce mobility — areas central to the India‑U.S. strategic partnership.
Analysts say the decision could temporarily affect Indian tech professionals seeking long‑term residency in the U.S., but both governments are expected to continue dialogue to safeguard mutual interests in the digital and employment sectors.
