Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, hailed worldwide for his extraordinary bravery, will receive Israel’s highest civilian heroism award after saving the lives of 172 passengers and crew aboard Flydubai Flight 1073.
On September 30, 2026, Machchhar fought off an attack from his co‑pilot inside the cockpit during the Dubai‑Tel Aviv flight. Despite being stabbed, he managed to regain control of the aircraft, preventing a potential disaster and ensuring the plane landed safely.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the honour on Thursday, presenting the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism to six individuals who played a role in averting tragedy. Machchhar’s courage has drawn global admiration, with leaders and aviation experts praising his quick thinking and resilience under life‑threatening circumstances.
The award underscores Israel’s recognition of international bravery and highlights the importance of vigilance in aviation safety. For India, Machchhar’s heroism has become a symbol of national pride, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum.
His recognition in Israel adds to the growing list of honours he has received since the incident, cementing his place as one of the most celebrated civilian pilots in recent history.
