The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala has defended its decision to switch to a generic medicine for patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), saying it will explore ways to reduce the drug's cost further.
Health Minister K. Muraleedharan told the Kerala Legislative Assembly on October 26 that the government's long-term aim was to provide medicines free of cost to all patients with SMA. He said the proposal would be discussed with Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, with an announcement expected later.
The statement came amid a political dispute over the decision to use a generic alternative for treating the rare genetic disorder. The Left Democratic Front (LDF), which is in opposition, staged a walkout after the Assembly rejected an adjournment motion on the issue.
SMA is a genetic condition that affects motor neurons, the nerve cells responsible for controlling muscle movement. Depending on its severity, the disease can cause progressive muscle weakness and difficulties with movement, swallowing or breathing.
Treatment can substantially affect patients' quality of life, but access is often constrained by the high cost of specialised medicines. Generic alternatives may offer a more affordable option, although their suitability depends on the specific medicine, regulatory approval and clinical guidance.
The government's position signals an effort to balance treatment access with affordability. However, the minister's statement did not establish a timeline for free medicines or confirm how such a policy would be funded.
Further details on the proposed price reductions, the generic drug involved and the arrangements for supplying treatment to patients will be important in assessing the potential impact of the decision.
