Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is facing questions about its durability after social media users reported cracked inner displays and possible hinge-related problems shortly after its release.
According to a report published by The Indian Express on October 27, 2026, several posts from purported owners showed damage appearing near the central hinge area. Images shared on Reddit and other social media platforms reportedly showed bright lines across the right side of the inner display. Some users also described hearing a crunching sound while folding or unfolding their devices.
The reported damage appears to occur near the transition between an opening for the cable connecting the phone's two halves and the central hinge support. However, the available information does not establish whether the incidents share the same underlying cause or represent a wider manufacturing issue.
One possible area of investigation is the mechanical stress placed on a foldable display during repeated opening and closing. The hinge, display layers and connecting components must work together while accommodating the device's movement. Damage to any of these components could potentially affect the screen, but the specific cause of the reported failures remains unknown.
Some social media users have advised owners not to press the centre of the device when closing it. Such advice should not be treated as an official Apple instruction unless confirmed by the company.
The iPhone Duo reportedly launched at around $2,000, placing it in the premium smartphone segment. Reports of display damage could therefore raise concerns among buyers about repair costs, warranty coverage and long-term reliability.
At present, the reports remain unverified user claims rather than confirmation of a widespread defect. More information, including Apple's response, technical inspections and details about the affected devices, would be needed to determine whether the problem is related to design, manufacturing, handling or isolated incidents.
Prospective buyers should consult Apple's official support guidance and warranty terms before making decisions based on social media reports alone.
