Congress Lok Sabha MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has denied sexual harassment allegations against him, describing the proceedings as a “witch hunt” motivated by political vendetta. The controversy has intensified after BJP women MPs approached President Droupadi Murmu seeking his suspension from Parliament.
Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur constituency, was removed from his position at JNU on October 9, following complaints from at least 11 students. The complaints were reportedly filed in May and accused him of sexual misconduct.
The Delhi Police registered a first information report (FIR) against Akoijam on Monday, based on a complaint by the university’s chief security officer. The allegations are subject to investigation, and the registration of an FIR does not establish guilt.
Akoijam, formerly a professor at JNU’s School of Social Sciences, has said he intends to challenge his dismissal through legal channels. He argued that the dispute concerns academic matters and teaching practices rather than sexual harassment, and alleged that the inquiry failed to follow established rules and procedures.
“They expect people from Manipur and the Northeast in general to remain silent,” Akoijam said, claiming that the action against him was intended to suppress his views on Manipur and the Northeast.
The case has also triggered debate over the university’s disciplinary process. A JNU teachers’ body has reportedly questioned the dismissal, describing the decision as hasty.
With a police investigation underway and the professor indicating a legal challenge, the matter raises questions about due process, institutional accountability and the handling of sexual harassment complaints in universities. The allegations and Akoijam’s response remain central to the ongoing dispute.
