The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced the annual shifting of its capital offices from Srinagar to Jammu under the traditional Darbar Move system. According to the schedule released on October 20, 2026, government offices in Jammu are set to reopen on November 2.
Under the arrangement, offices in Srinagar, the summer capital, will begin closing on October 30 and October 31. The transition involves relocating government employees, official records and files from Srinagar to Jammu, which serves as the winter capital.
The Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) has been directed to arrange sufficient buses in good condition to transport employees on October 31 and November 1. The transportation arrangements are intended to ensure a smooth transition between the two administrative centres.
More than 9,000 government employees from approximately 51 departments are expected to participate in the annual relocation. The exercise is a significant administrative operation involving the movement of personnel and official documents between the two cities.
The Darbar Move tradition was discontinued by the Lieutenant Governor's administration after 2021. However, the Omar Abdullah-led government resumed the practice in 2025, bringing back the seasonal transfer of administrative offices between Srinagar and Jammu.
The arrangement reflects Jammu and Kashmir's longstanding administrative tradition of operating from Srinagar during the warmer months and Jammu during winter. The annual shift is intended to maintain government operations across both regions during changing seasonal conditions.
With the November 2 reopening date approaching, departments and transport authorities are preparing for the movement of staff and records to ensure that administrative work continues without major disruption.
