Amazon founder Jeff Bezos believes artificial intelligence could eventually transform working life by allowing some people to work just three days a week while earning enough to support their families. He also suggested that productivity gains from AI could make it possible for some households to depend on a single income instead of requiring two earners.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, Bezos challenged predictions that artificial intelligence would inevitably trigger widespread unemployment. He acknowledged that many experts expect AI to eliminate jobs but said he disagreed with the view that large-scale job losses were the technology's inevitable outcome.

Bezos argued that advances in productivity could change how people work and how much time they need to spend earning a living. However, he did not explain the specific economic conditions or mechanisms that would make shorter working weeks and single-income households achievable.

Asked about Amazon's reported job cuts, Bezos attributed the company's workforce reductions to rapid hiring and headcount growth following the COVID-19 pandemic. His comments come amid growing debate over how AI adoption will affect employment, wages and business operations.

Bezos also discussed the possibility of an AI investment bubble. He said investors could lose money if speculative investments collapse, but argued that the underlying technology would remain useful. In his view, periods of excessive investment can still benefit society by funding ideas and innovations that might otherwise struggle to attract capital.

He also expressed support for the term “super intelligence,” suggesting that the word “artificial” can carry associations with something fake.

While Bezos's vision offers an optimistic view of AI's potential, shorter workweeks and greater household financial security remain possibilities rather than guaranteed outcomes.
