OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed disappointment with MBA students who continue to pursue traditional career paths instead of exploring emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence. Speaking at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Altman encouraged young professionals to look beyond established career trends and focus on building something new.
Altman said his recurring frustration with MBA students was their tendency to pursue work that had been considered attractive several years earlier rather than taking an interest in what is changing now. His remarks highlighted the growing gap between conventional business career choices and the opportunities emerging from rapid advances in AI.
He urged ambitious students and graduates to respond to technological change with curiosity and initiative. Rather than relying entirely on familiar corporate strategies, he suggested that young people should consider developing new products, businesses and solutions around emerging technologies.
His comments also addressed concerns about AI's impact on employment. Altman acknowledged that artificial intelligence could automate many tasks currently performed by humans, but rejected the idea that this necessarily meant an overall collapse in jobs. In his view, periods of significant technological change can create opportunities for people willing to experiment, adapt and take calculated risks.
The remarks offer a challenge to business graduates entering a rapidly changing job market. Traditional management skills may remain valuable, but understanding AI and identifying practical ways to use it could become increasingly important. For MBA students, the message is to look ahead rather than simply follow career paths that were successful in the past.
