Indian Railways has extended its Optional Travel Insurance (OTI) scheme to passengers purchasing reserved tickets directly from railway reservation counters. The facility will be available from October 27, 2026, allowing eligible passengers to opt for insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh by paying just 45 paise per person, including taxes.

The move expands access to travel insurance beyond passengers booking reserved tickets online. It offers counter-ticket buyers an additional option for financial protection during their train journeys.

Under the scheme, passengers can choose whether to purchase the insurance while booking their reserved tickets. The premium is set at 45 paise per person, making the cover available at a nominal cost. The maximum coverage is ₹10 lakh, although the actual benefits depend on the policy's terms and conditions.

The extension could be particularly useful for passengers who prefer purchasing tickets at railway reservation counters rather than using online booking platforms. By making the option available through both channels, Indian Railways is widening access to an existing passenger protection facility.

However, passengers should check the applicable policy conditions, including eligibility requirements, coverage limits, exclusions and the process for making a claim, before opting in. The maximum cover amount should not be interpreted as an automatic payout for every incident.

The initiative highlights the importance of making travel-related financial protection accessible through different ticket-booking channels. For passengers, the low premium provides an additional choice when planning a journey, while the policy terms determine the protection available in specific circumstances.

Passengers purchasing reserved tickets from railway counters from October 27 can ask about the optional insurance facility at the time of booking and confirm the applicable conditions before making their decision.
