Actor Imran Khan will not be asked to leave India on October 28, the Bombay High Court was assured by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Mumbai, on Tuesday. The assurance came as the court considered his petition challenging a notice directing him to leave the country over his alleged participation in a political protest.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna scheduled the next hearing for November 2, 2026, at 3 pm. The date was set after the FRRO sought time to obtain instructions. Khan’s lawyer, senior counsel Venkatesh Dhond, had stressed the urgency of the matter because the original notice set October 28 as the deadline.
The notice, issued on October 15, directed Khan, a US citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, to leave India. It followed his alleged participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Khan filed his petition on October 17, arguing that he had not violated the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, or the Citizenship Act. He also contended that the notice did not identify the specific legal provision he had allegedly breached.
The actor has denied violating any rules. He said he had not crossed police barricades to enter the protest site and was apprehended while returning to his vehicle after media personnel surrounded him.
Khan has also argued that OCI cardholders form a distinct statutory category and that the action against him was disproportionate, given that he has lived in India for more than four decades.
The court is scheduled to take up his plea on November 2, when the matter is expected to be considered further.
