During the telephone conversation on Tuesday night, October 13, 2026, the two leaders agreed to work towards concluding a trade agreement soon. The discussion comes as both countries seek to strengthen bilateral cooperation and rebuild relations following a period of diplomatic tensions.

According to the report, senior Canadian ministers, including Foreign Minister Anita Anand and International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, are visiting New Delhi for discussions with their Indian counterparts. They are scheduled to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

The meetings are expected to advance economic cooperation and help finalise arrangements for Modi’s proposed visit to Ottawa in December 2026.

The latest diplomatic engagement also follows discussions between Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Canadian Senior Diplomatic and International Affairs Advisor David Morrison last week. Their meeting focused on cooperation in security and law enforcement.

Relations between India and Canada faced serious difficulties between 2023 and 2025 following tensions surrounding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The issue contributed to a major diplomatic fallout between the two countries.

The renewed high-level engagement signals efforts to move forward through dialogue, trade and security cooperation. A potential trade agreement could create fresh opportunities for businesses and strengthen economic links between the two countries.

With senior officials meeting in New Delhi and a possible December visit on the agenda, both governments appear focused on advancing bilateral ties and building a more constructive partnership.
