Opposition INDIA bloc MPs staged a sit‑in protest at Gandhi Smriti on Thursday, intensifying their demand for Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, joined by alliance MPs, addressed the media after a strategy meeting, vowing to continue nationwide mobilisations. Meanwhile, in Bengaluru’s Freedom Park, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee participated in a “People’s Tribunal” against the SIR exercise, calling it a direct attack on democracy. Dipke accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “murdering democracy and vote theft,” announcing that protests would continue until the CEC steps down.
The tribunal, supported by AISA and other student organisations, will be followed by a symbolic “chappal protest”. Parallelly, the Indian Youth Congress moved the Delhi High Court against police refusal to allow a protest at Jantar Mantar, with the Court agreeing to hear the plea on October 9.
At least two fresh FIRs have also been registered in connection with recent demonstrations, underscoring the escalating confrontation between opposition groups and the Election Commission. With mass mobilisation planned for October 10, tensions are expected to rise further.
