The INDIA bloc has postponed its planned symbolic “public impeachment” event against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after rain disrupted arrangements in New Delhi. Originally set for Friday, October 30, it is now expected on Saturday, October 31, at the same time.

The event is planned for the lawns of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Rajaji Marg. The bloc had earlier sought permission to hold it at the Constitution Club and Talkatora Stadium. The Congress said it was denied permission for those venues and accused authorities of trying to silence public criticism.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to chair proceedings. Kharge is set to move the motion, with Rahul Gandhi delivering concluding remarks. Organisers said around 30 speakers from 21 parties, alongside civil society members and people affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, would participate.

Here, “public impeachment” refers to a symbolic protest, not a formal parliamentary vote to remove the CEC. Opposition parties accuse Kumar of partisan conduct and have raised concerns about SIR; these remain their allegations.

The postponement puts the event one day before an INDIA bloc rally planned at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. Leaders say the rally will protest alleged electoral irregularities and the voter-roll revision exercise.

The change leaves its purpose intact: leaders say they want to spotlight concerns about voter rolls and election administration. The programme remains a political demonstration; its impact will depend on how the bloc keeps the issue in wider public debate.
