Tragedy struck North East Delhi’s New Seemapuri on Wednesday afternoon when the front portion of a four‑storey building collapsed, burying adjoining houses under heavy debris.
Police confirmed that three people, including two children and a pregnant woman, lost their lives in the incident. The woman was identified as Gulafsa, who was four months pregnant. The two children, one aged 12, are yet to be identified.
Rescue teams, including the Delhi Fire Service and local police, rushed to the site around 3 p.m., pulling 11 survivors from the rubble. Operations are still underway to locate and save those feared trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as residents scrambled to safety while emergency crews battled congested lanes to reach the site. Authorities have cordoned off the area and urged people to stay away to facilitate rescue efforts.
The collapse has reignited concerns about structural safety in Delhi’s older residential neighborhoods, where unchecked construction and poor maintenance often pose risks. Civic officials are expected to launch an inquiry into the incident, while families of victims await further updates.
