elhi’s newly designated protest venue, Ramlila Maidan, has almost no availability for the remainder of 2026, with only December 29, 30 and 31 open for bookings, according to officials.
The 12-acre ground, which can accommodate around 50,000 people, is among three locations designated for protests in the national capital. Its limited availability could pose a challenge for organisations, political groups and other bodies planning demonstrations before the end of the year.
Officials familiar with the bookings said the venue has no available dates for the next two and a half months. Those seeking permission to organise events can currently choose only from the final three days of December.
The development comes after Delhi Police designated Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground in North Delhi and CBD Ground in East Delhi as protest venues following the de-notification of Jantar Mantar Road for such activities.
The move changes the arrangements for demonstrations in the capital, where protest locations have been a key issue for political parties, civil society groups and organisations seeking to stage public gatherings.
With a capacity of approximately 50,000 people, Ramlila Maidan is one of the larger venues available for demonstrations. However, the current booking situation means that groups planning rallies or protests may need to consider the other designated grounds or adjust their schedules.
It remains unclear from the information provided how quickly cancellations, if any, could create additional openings at Ramlila Maidan.
For now, December 29, 30 and 31 are the only dates officials have identified as available for booking at the venue before the end of 2026.
