Delhi Police has reportedly denotified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site and suggested three alternative locations for demonstrations, as political tensions rise over ongoing electoral and judicial issues.
The development comes as the INDIA bloc launched a protest march from Barakhamba intersection in Connaught Place, New Delhi, on October 12, 2026. The march was led by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, with security personnel deployed along the route.
The protest comes amid developments surrounding a proposed meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. According to reports, the CJI declined Gandhi’s request for a meeting scheduled for Monday, October 12.
Sources said the request was turned down because the issues the INDIA bloc leaders intended to raise were already sub judice, meaning they were under consideration by the Supreme Court. The sources also indicated that the court could not intervene in matters concerning governance and the functioning of the State through its administrative side.
The reported decision regarding Jantar Mantar could affect how opposition parties and other groups organise future demonstrations in the national capital. However, the three alternative locations suggested by Delhi Police were not identified in the information available for this report.
The INDIA bloc’s march and the developments surrounding the proposed meeting have brought renewed attention to the right to protest, police restrictions and the role of the judiciary in politically sensitive matters.
