The Delhi government has withheld the current duty charge (CDC) of the post of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) assigned to ACP Vivek Bhagat, who faces allegations of sexually harassing a woman journalist during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Officials clarified that the proposal to confer additional duty charges to 12 DANIPS officers, including Bhagat, was initiated on August 25, “much before the present set of events.” However, in light of the serious allegations, the government announced late Monday that Bhagat’s appointment to the additional DCP role would not proceed.
The decision comes amid mounting protests by journalists and civil society groups outside the Parliament Street Police Station, demanding accountability and swift action against the officer. The incident has intensified scrutiny of police conduct during demonstrations linked to the ongoing political row over the Election Commission.
By withholding Bhagat’s CDC, the Delhi government signaled its intent to address public concerns while distancing itself from controversy surrounding the officer. The move is expected to add pressure on law enforcement agencies to ensure impartial investigations into the allegations.
