The Congress Party on Monday intensified its demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, claiming his ability to “execute G2’s illegal orders” has made him a liability for the country.
The sharp attack came from Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who alleged that Kumar’s conduct undermines the integrity of India’s electoral system. His remarks followed a significant observation by Supreme Court judge Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, who stated that any process that “disenfranchises millions of Indian citizens” is “intrinsically arbitrary” and a “negation” of the constitutional order.
Ramesh argued that the Election Commission, under Kumar’s leadership, has failed to uphold democratic principles and transparency. He added that the opposition will continue to press for accountability, warning that the credibility of India’s electoral institutions is at stake.
The controversy surrounding the CEC has triggered widespread political debate, with opposition parties uniting to question the functioning of the poll panel. The Supreme Court’s ongoing hearings on related petitions are expected to play a crucial role in determining the future of Kumar’s tenure.
