The Congress Party on Monday mounted a sharp offensive against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of “illegally” modifying Form 6, the application used by first‑time voters to enroll in the electoral roll.

The attack came after the Supreme Court clarified that it had not approved any changes to Form 6 during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across several States. Congress leaders alleged that Kumar “lied” and acted at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming the move “betrayed the Constitution in letter and spirit.”

Form 6 is a crucial document for new voters, and opposition leaders argue that the modifications introduced under Kumar’s leadership created hurdles for youth and first‑time voters. The party has demanded accountability, warning that such unilateral actions undermine democratic rights and electoral transparency.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi joined the criticism, insisting that the CEC’s conduct has eroded trust in the Election Commission. The controversy adds to the growing political storm surrounding the poll panel, with petitions already pending before the Supreme Court challenging its recent decisions.
