The Central Information Commission (CIC) has recommended that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) restore the practice of displaying the detailed, paper-wise marks of candidates selected in the Civil Services Main examination.

The matter arose from a Right to Information (RTI) application seeking comparative data on marks secured by selected candidates in General Studies papers, optional subjects and the Personality Test over a 10-year period up to 2023.

The CIC noted that the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) did not have records of a formal decision behind the discontinuation of the practice from 2018.

In its response, the UPSC said that after the final result is declared, detailed marks are forwarded to the DoPT and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).

The DoPT, meanwhile, maintained that the detailed marks are generated and maintained by the UPSC.

The commission’s recommendation could bring greater transparency to the way Civil Services examination marks are disclosed, particularly for candidates seeking to understand performance across individual papers.

The recommendation follows the RTI applicant’s request for detailed comparative information and raises questions about the availability and disclosure of paper-wise marks from recent Civil Services examinations.
