The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Punjab. The development came on October 21, a day after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that the State government would transfer the case to the central agency in response to the family's demand.
A CBI team led by a senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) arrived in Mansa to begin the investigation. Officials indicated that Jhota's family is expected to be examined as investigators gather information and establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
The agency has also announced that Jhota's post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh by a team of medical experts.
Following the examination, a magistrate in Chandigarh will conduct inquest proceedings to determine the cause of death. The medical findings and the inquest are expected to form important parts of the investigation.
The transfer of the case to the CBI follows the family's demand for an independent investigation. The move places the case under the central agency's responsibility as it works to establish the facts and examine the circumstances of the alleged murder.
Jhota was known for his anti-drug activism in Punjab, where drug-related concerns have remained a significant public issue. His death has drawn attention to demands for accountability and a thorough investigation.
The CBI's investigation is now expected to focus on gathering evidence, recording statements and determining the circumstances that led to Jhota's death. Further details are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses.
