At 69, actor Anil Kapoor has returned to running after a four-year break. The actor recently shared an Instagram reel showing himself running and reflected on how his fitness journey had continued despite the pause.
“Four years since I last recorded a run like this,” Kapoor wrote, adding that progress is not always about speed and can also come from persistence and consistency.
For people in their late 60s who want to restart running after several years away, however, returning to their previous routine immediately may not be the safest approach. Age, fitness level, previous injuries, joint health and the reason for the break can all affect how the body responds to running.
A gradual restart is generally important. Someone returning after a long gap can begin with walking and short periods of easy jogging before gradually increasing running time. The focus should initially be on building tolerance rather than distance or speed.
Strength and mobility work can also support a return to running, particularly for the muscles around the hips, knees and ankles. Proper footwear and adequate recovery between sessions are equally important.
People with existing medical conditions, persistent joint pain or a history of significant injuries should consider speaking with a healthcare professional before beginning a running programme. Any pain that persists or worsens during training should not simply be ignored.
Kapoor’s return highlights that taking a break from a particular form of exercise does not necessarily mean giving up on fitness. For older adults, restarting gradually and consistently can be more important than trying to match their previous pace or performance.
