Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine has transferred two captured North Korean soldiers to South Korea, marking a rare diplomatic move amid the ongoing war with Russia.
Speaking at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Zelenskyy said: “Recently, we sent two North Korean prisoners of war to the Republic of Korea.”
The Ukrainian leader explained that the soldiers had been captured while fighting alongside Russian forces. He noted that he had previously offered to hand them over to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if such an exchange could secure the release of Ukrainians held captive in Russia.
The transfer underscores the complex geopolitical dimensions of the war, with North Korea accused of supplying weapons and manpower to Moscow. By sending the prisoners to South Korea, Kyiv has highlighted Pyongyang’s involvement while strengthening ties with Seoul.
South Korea has yet to issue a detailed response, but analysts say the move could intensify scrutiny of North Korea’s role in the conflict and bolster international pressure on Russia’s alliances.
Zelenskyy’s announcement adds a new layer to the global debate on accountability, alliances, and the humanitarian costs of the war.
