A 61-year-old IIT Kanpur alumnus living in Dallas, Texas, is considering returning to India after struggling to secure full-time employment in the United States. Gautam Dev, a former software engineer, has reportedly turned to gig work after leaving his job in September 2024.
According to an account published by Business Insider, Dev left his previous role after being asked to relocate to another state. Nearly two years later, he has yet to find another full-time software position.
The prolonged job search has put pressure on his finances. With his savings reportedly exhausted and Social Security benefits approaching, Dev is weighing the challenges of continuing his life in the US against the possibility of returning to India.
His experience highlights the difficulties some experienced technology professionals can face when trying to re-enter the workforce after leaving a long-term role. While professional qualifications and years of experience can be valuable, securing another position may still be challenging.
Dev's situation also raises broader questions about career transitions later in life, financial security after leaving employment and the choices faced by Indian professionals who have built careers overseas.
For now, he is considering his options as he approaches a significant financial and personal decision: whether to continue seeking stable employment in the US or start a new chapter in India.
