GameStop has sharply increased the price of pre-owned and refurbished PlayStation 5 Pro consoles in the US, with some used models now costing substantially more than a new system. The retailer’s website lists the pre-owned PS5 Pro at $1,399.99, while versions with a disc drive are priced at $1,499.99.
That pricing is notable because GameStop currently lists a new PS5 Pro at $899.99. As a result, the pre-owned digital model is $500 more expensive than the listed price of a new console, although new inventory remains difficult to find.
The change was reportedly accompanied by an internal GameStop memo instructing employees to update pre-owned PS5 Pro prices. The document reportedly stated that the higher price compared with a new console was intentional. However, the memo itself was circulated online and should be treated separately from GameStop’s publicly visible pricing.
The unusual prices come as demand for the PS5 Pro remains high and new stock is limited. The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI has also been cited by industry reports as a possible factor behind increased demand for high-end PlayStation hardware, although GameStop has not publicly confirmed that as the reason for its pricing decision.
Sony originally launched the PS5 Pro in 2024 at $699.99. Its current US price is $899.99 following subsequent price increases.
For shoppers, the situation means checking availability and comparing new, pre-owned and refurbished listings is particularly important before paying a premium for a used console.
