Actor Sanjay Dutt has clarified his remarks about not feeling “peace” in India after comments made during his appearance on Shekhar Suman’s talk show Shekhar Tonite sparked backlash on social media.
Dutt addressed the controversy in a post on X on October 4, saying he never intended to hurt, offend or disrespect any individual, community or institution. He explained that his remarks were part of a scripted conversation designed to be light-hearted and humorous.
During the Gandhi Jayanti special episode, Dutt spoke about the country and said that while Indians are warm and hospitable, he no longer felt the same sense of peace in India. The remarks were subsequently widely discussed online, with some viewers interpreting them as commentary on the country's current situation.
In his clarification, the actor said the spirit of the conversation was similar to the humour and satire associated with his Munna Bhai films, particularly the idea of “Gandhigiri”, which he described as conveying love, togetherness, warmth and goodwill. He said his words had unfortunately been interpreted outside their intended context.
The episode also featured Dutt humorously imagining himself as the Prime Minister for five minutes and delivering a fictional address in his iconic Munna Bhai style.
The controversy has since shifted toward the context and scripted nature of the conversation, while Dutt’s clarification seeks to explain the intent behind his remarks.
