Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed back against tech billionaire Elon Musk’s comments supporting separatism in Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, asserting that Canada’s future will be decided solely by its citizens.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin and Sherbrooke Mayor Marie‑Claude Bibeau, Carney emphasized that national priorities remain in the hands of Canadians. “The future of Canada will be decided by Canadians and the priorities of Canadians, the priorities of the people of Quebec,” he said when asked about Musk’s remarks.
The statement comes ahead of Alberta’s scheduled vote on October 19, which will determine whether the province remains within Canada or moves toward a referendum on separation. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has already announced she will vote to remain in Canada, underscoring her commitment to national unity.
Musk’s intervention has sparked debate across Canada, with critics accusing him of undermining democratic processes. Carney’s response highlights Ottawa’s stance that external voices cannot dictate the country’s future.
Observers note that the upcoming Alberta vote will serve as a key indicator of regional sentiment, while Carney’s remarks reaffirm the federal government’s determination to preserve Canada’s unity in the face of separatist pressures.
