The National Testing Agency (NTA) is developing an artificial intelligence-enabled helpline to help students get answers to examination-related queries in multiple languages. The toll-free service is currently being tested and has not yet been officially announced to the public, according to a report published on October 15, 2026.

The helpline will use the toll-free number 1800 180 47 47, which was previously used to collect suggestions from stakeholders on examination reforms. The number had been issued in August by the High Power Task Force (HPTF), led by Nandan Nilekani, with stakeholders invited to submit their suggestions by September 13.

With the committee having received suggestions and work on its final report underway, the number was no longer in active use for that purpose. A government official told The Indian Express that it was therefore decided to repurpose the number for the NTA help desk.

The proposed AI features are expected to allow students to ask questions in different languages and receive answers based on information available in the NTA’s backend systems. The initiative aims to make examination-related information easier for candidates to access without relying solely on conventional help-desk support.

The service could be particularly useful for students seeking clarification about examinations, application procedures and other candidate-related information. However, the report does not specify the full range of questions the AI system will handle or whether students will also be able to connect with human support staff.

As testing continues, candidates should wait for an official announcement from the NTA before relying on the helpline as an operational public service. The number’s proposed new purpose and the launch timeline should be confirmed through official communication.

The development comes as examination authorities continue to explore technology-based ways to improve communication with candidates. Further details about the helpline’s launch, language coverage and operating arrangements are yet to be confirmed in the supplied report.
