The Surface Ultra forms part of Microsoft’s broader hybrid AI strategy, combining local processing with cloud-based services. By handling more AI workloads on the device, Microsoft is positioning the laptop for users who want greater performance and reduced dependence on cloud computing.

Surface Ultra focuses on local AI

One of the key features of the new laptop is its ability to run large language models and AI agents locally. Microsoft says the device can handle models with more than 120 billion parameters entirely on-device, potentially reducing the need for recurring cloud computing resources.

The approach could be particularly useful for developers and researchers working with AI models, as local processing can provide greater control over workloads and data.

Nvidia-powered workstation also announced

Alongside the Surface Ultra, Microsoft unveiled a new workstation powered by the Nvidia RTX Spark chip. The system is designed for development and AI-focused workloads and includes tools such as VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and PowerShell 7.

Microsoft also showcased an updated Windows 11 experience featuring Execution Containers, Search Customization, interface changes and additional privacy features.

Together, the new hardware and software announcements highlight Microsoft’s push to make Windows a platform capable of supporting both local and cloud-based AI workloads.
