Microsoft and Nvidia have unveiled a new generation of Windows PCs built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform, targeting developers, creators and other users who need powerful local AI computing.
The headline device is the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch laptop designed around the RTX Spark superchip. Microsoft says it can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory and up to one petaflop of AI performance, allowing users to run AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally. The RTX Spark platform combines an Nvidia Blackwell RTX GPU with a Grace CPU and unified memory. Nvidia says the system is designed to bring demanding AI workloads, including model development and inference, closer to the PC rather than requiring constant cloud processing. (nvidia.com)
Microsoft also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box for developers working with AI models and agents. The company says it is designed for local inference, evaluation and experimentation and comes with developer tools including Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, Python and Node. (microsoft.com)
The new hardware is accompanied by Windows 11 improvements focused on what Microsoft calls hybrid intelligence. Microsoft Execution Containers are designed to contain AI agents, while Windows can route workloads between local and cloud-based models. (microsoft.com)
RTX Spark-powered PCs are also coming from manufacturers including ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI. The new systems are scheduled to begin shipping from October 16.
The launch marks a broader push to make high-performance AI processing a native part of Windows PCs rather than relying exclusively on cloud-based computing.
