The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the Rajya Sabha by-election in Madhya Pradesh will be held on November 12, 2026. The election will fill the seat vacated by former Union Minister L. Murugan following his resignation.
According to the ECI’s announcement on Thursday, October 22, the election process will begin with the issuance of the official notification on October 26, 2026. Candidates interested in contesting the bypoll will have until November 2 to file their nomination papers.
The scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for November 3, when election officials will examine the submitted documents to determine candidates’ eligibility. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until November 5.
The November 12 polling date will mark the final stage of the election process. The bypoll is expected to draw political attention as parties assess their candidates and strategies for securing the vacant seat in the Upper House of Parliament.
Rajya Sabha elections are conducted through an indirect voting process, in which elected members of the respective State Legislative Assembly participate. Unlike Lok Sabha elections, voters do not directly elect Rajya Sabha members.
The Madhya Pradesh bypoll is part of the parliamentary seat-filling process following Murugan’s resignation. The outcome will determine who represents the state in the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the vacant seat’s term.
With the notification scheduled for October 26, political parties and prospective candidates will have a limited period to complete nomination formalities before polling day. Further details regarding the candidates and the election arrangements are expected as the process moves forward.
