Apple may be preparing one of the biggest changes to the MacBook lineup in years, with reports pointing to a high-end laptop featuring an OLED touchscreen. The device has been informally referred to as the “MacBook Ultra”, although Apple has not confirmed the name or the product.
Rumors suggest the redesigned machine could be offered in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes and sit above the existing MacBook Pro lineup. Its biggest change would be the move to an OLED display, potentially using tandem OLED technology similar to that found in the iPad Pro. A touchscreen would also mark a major shift for Apple, which has historically kept touch input away from macOS laptops.
Other reported design changes include a thinner and lighter chassis, a redesigned display cutout and a possible Dynamic Island-style feature. A reinforced hinge has also been discussed to reduce screen movement when users interact with the display by touch.
The chip situation remains less certain. Apple has already introduced the M6 chip in the new Mac mini, while its latest Mac Studio uses M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors. Some reports suggest the first high-end OLED MacBook could instead use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips before Apple moves to newer Pro and Max generations.
As for the launch, October 2026 remains a possibility in current reports, but the timing is not confirmed. Some recent reports have also pointed to a late-2026 or early-2027 window, making the rumored MacBook Ultra one of Apple’s most closely watched upcoming products.
