Schools across Kondagaon district in Chhattisgarh will set up geography laboratories following the national recognition of teacher Vinayak Kohli for his innovative approach to social science education.
Kohli, a social science teacher at PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya Kondagaon, was named the national winner in the Geography category at the India’s Best Teachers Awards 2026. His teaching model combines Bastar’s culture, art, local geography and everyday life with classroom learning.
The initiative aims to make geography more practical and engaging by connecting students with topics such as local soil, crops, forests, crafts and livelihoods. Students will also learn map work, physical geography and human geography through models, mini-museums and projects.
Following the award, Kondagaon Collector Nupur Rashi Panna directed schools to develop geography laboratories under the district’s geography laboratory and art-integrated teaching project. One school in each development block has been selected for the initial implementation.
Kohli has been appointed as the Head Mentor for the project. His responsibilities include guiding schools on laboratory design and teaching methods, supporting art-integrated learning and mentoring teachers of social science, geography, history and art.
He will also visit selected schools to monitor implementation and help maintain quality standards.
The administration said the project is intended to promote experiential and action-based learning while supporting the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020. It also seeks to preserve and showcase Bastar’s rich cultural heritage through education.
The selected schools have been directed to arrange student visits to the geography laboratory at PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya Kondagaon.
