IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla has been sent on leave following the death of second-year BTech student Sahil Wakode. The institute has also formed a 10-member committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The decision was taken by the IIT Bombay Board of Governors, according to officials. The committee is headed by Ramesh Venkateswaran, chairperson of the Board of Governors at IIT Palakkad, and has been asked to submit its report within a week.
Student representatives have also been included in the panel following demands raised during protests on campus.
Doolla was the invigilator during an examination in which Wakode was allegedly found using a mobile phone. Wakode, a second-year student in IIT Bombay’s Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was found dead in his hostel room on September 18, several hours after the examination.
The Mumbai Police has registered a case against Doolla under charges related to abetment to suicide and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The internal inquiry is expected to examine the events surrounding the examination and the circumstances preceding Wakode’s death. The committee’s findings are expected within the stipulated one-week period.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the professor have not been established as a final finding.
