A day after his arrest during high‑voltage polling in Rejinagar, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir broke down before the media, hinting at an early exit from electoral politics.

Kabir, who spent nearly 12 hours in custody following a confrontation with police outside his party office, said he was deeply disillusioned with the current political climate. He claimed that the BJP would win the Muslim‑majority Rejinagar constituency in Murshidabad district, a statement that surprised many given his own party’s presence in the region.

The AJUP leader, often at the center of controversies during the campaign, also announced that he would not attend Assembly sessions as long as Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari remained in office. In an emotional address, Kabir apologized to the people of Nowda, acknowledging that his decision might disappoint supporters but insisting it was made with a heavy heart.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions in Bengal politics, where the Rejinagar bypoll has become a flashpoint between rival parties. Kabir’s possible retirement could mark the end of a turbulent political career, while his prediction of a BJP victory adds another layer of intrigue to the state’s evolving political landscape.
