The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into corruption allegations involving individuals linked to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government, sparking a political storm in the State.
The directive came while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) that alleged the involvement of senior Punjab officers in multiple scams, including cash-for-transfers, cash-for-tenders, and cash-for-favourable policies. The petition argued that systemic corruption was undermining governance and demanded an impartial investigation.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Justice Rohit Kapoor observed that, based on the material presented, a fair and transparent probe was necessary to uphold public trust. The court emphasized that only an independent investigation could ensure accountability in such serious matters.
The ruling has given fresh ammunition to opposition parties, who accused AAP of betraying its much‑touted “zero‑tolerance” anti‑corruption stance. Leaders from rival parties said the order exposes the gap between AAP’s promises and its governance record.
The CBI probe is expected to intensify scrutiny of Punjab’s administrative machinery and could have significant political repercussions ahead of upcoming elections.
