Granite mining baron R Veeramani has been arrested along with two associates in connection with a child sexual abuse case that Chennai Police had controversially attempted to close earlier this year.

Back in February, investigators filed a closure report despite possessing a video allegedly showing the assault of a minor girl, having searched the property where the crime was said to have occurred, and questioning Veeramani and his associate Shanthi. Police also recorded statements from domestic workers, a puncture shop operator, and a hospital employee — all of whom claimed outsiders were not allowed into the house.

The case stalled after police said the girl in the video could not be traced and the original recording could not be retrieved from a DVR. Veeramani denied being the man in the footage, while Shanthi insisted the room shown was not part of her house.

The arrest now raises serious questions about the earlier closure attempt and the handling of evidence in cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Activists argue that the police’s reluctance to pursue the case highlights systemic failures in protecting vulnerable children and ensuring accountability for powerful individuals.
