Assam Congress chief and MP Gaurav Gogoi was detained by police during a protest in Guwahati demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstrations, organised by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, were part of a nationwide campaign against alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s functioning.

Protests erupted across multiple cities including Lucknow, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Jammu, with Congress workers accusing the Commission of “unauthorised voter‑roll changes” and centralisation of power. The agitation follows an Indian Express investigation revealing that two of three Election Commissioners — Vivek Joshi and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu — had formally objected to decisions at least 14 times in the past 10 months.

In Jammu, Congress leader Chaudhary Lal Singh alleged widespread “rigging” and misuse of voter rights, while heavy police deployment was reported at protest sites. Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) also demanded Kumar’s resignation within 48 hours, announcing a “Fix the Election Commission” campaign to push for transparency and accountability.

Adding to the controversy, Goa CEO Sanjay Goel confirmed that 97 voters excluded from the final roll after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) are being processed separately through house‑to‑house verification. The issue has intensified calls for reforms to safeguard electoral integrity.
