Dhoomakethu takes a familiar time-loop premise and gives it a distinctly quirky Malayalam comedy treatment. Directed by Sudhi Maddison, the film follows Lathin Kumar, also known as Kuttan, played by Sajin Gopu, whose much-awaited wedding takes an unexpected supernatural turn.
Kuttan is thrilled to marry Sharmila, played by Nikhila Vimal, after finally finding a partner who loves him. However, his happiness lasts only until their wedding night. Just before the couple can begin their married life, masked attackers arrive, kill Kuttan and abduct Sharmila.
The strange part begins after his death. Kuttan wakes up again on the morning of his wedding and finds himself forced to experience the same day repeatedly, with the deadly encounter waiting for him at night.
The time-loop setup gives the film plenty of opportunities for situational humour, and the cast makes the most of them. Sajin Gopu brings an energetic presence to Kuttan, while Nikhila Vimal provides strong support. Ganapathi, however, frequently steals the spotlight with his comic timing and performance.
The film’s biggest problem is its repetition. As Kuttan repeatedly attempts to understand and escape his predicament, the narrative begins to feel trapped in the same cycle as its protagonist. Some supporting arcs also lack the depth needed to strengthen the larger mystery.
Despite these limitations, Dhoomakethu has enough amusing performances and unusual ideas to make parts of its journey entertaining. The film works best when it embraces its eccentric humour rather than trying to stretch its mystery beyond what the screenplay can sustain.
