The demonstration was organised under the banner of “People Against SIR” and formed part of a series of protests taking place across India against the electoral roll revision exercise.

According to the report, around 500 protesters participated in the march. Activists and public figures, including Yogendra Yadav and Annie Raja, joined the demonstration alongside farmers’ organisations and representatives of civil society groups.

The protesters called for the rollback of the SIR exercise, raising concerns about the process and demanding accountability from the Election Commission’s leadership. Their demonstration also focused on the role of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whose resignation they sought.

The protest led to police action in the national capital. Delhi Police said approximately 20 demonstrators were detained and later released. Protesters, however, claimed that around 50 people had been rounded up.

Police also registered at least one First Information Report (FIR), alleging violations of prohibitory orders issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

The demonstration highlights continuing public opposition to the electoral roll revision exercise, with different groups joining calls for changes to the process.

With protests reported in several parts of the country, the debate over SIR and the Election Commission’s actions remains a significant political and civic issue.
