Two leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, have been remanded to five days of judicial custody following a protest-related incident at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The order was issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, a day after the two leaders were detained along with 12 other party members for allegedly entering Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Police had de-notified the location as a designated protest site on October 12.
According to the police, two first information reports (FIRs) have been registered against the 14 party members. The cases involve allegations of trespassing, disobeying official orders and obstructing police personnel while they were performing their duties.
The police action followed the group’s alleged entry into the area after its status as an authorised protest location had changed.
Another CJP member, Ajinkya Shinde, who was placed under preventive arrest, was released after furnishing a personal bond and surety of ₹5,000. According to a police statement, he also gave an undertaking to maintain peace and good behaviour for six months.
The incident has intensified the political confrontation surrounding protests in the national capital. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke criticised the government’s actions, accusing the Narendra Modi-led administration of imposing what he described as an “unofficial Emergency”.
The allegation reflects the party’s opposition to the police action and restrictions surrounding the demonstration.
The development has brought renewed attention to the rules governing protests at designated locations in Delhi and the legal consequences of allegedly violating police orders.
Further proceedings in the cases will determine the next steps for the detained party leaders as the political debate over protest rights and restrictions continues.
