The provisional data for India’s Population Census 2027 will be available by March–April next year, according to Amit Sharma, Chief Principal Census Officer and Director of Census Operations for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Sharma confirmed that Ladakh became the first State/UT to complete the entire Census exercise on October 5, ahead of the nationwide schedule that concludes in February 2027. Snow‑bound areas of other Himalayan states have also successfully finished enumeration, ensuring timely progress despite challenging terrain.

This Census marks several historic firsts. It is India’s first fully digital Census, leveraging technology for faster and more accurate data collection. It is also the first Census in independent India to enumerate caste beyond Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, a move expected to provide deeper insights into social demographics.

Sharma noted that many citizens initially confused the Census with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, highlighting the need for clearer communication between government agencies and the public.

The upcoming provisional data will serve as a critical resource for policymakers, researchers, and planners, shaping strategies in governance, welfare, and development.
