Britain’s Green Party has voted to officially classify Zionism as a form of racism, a move that has triggered sharp criticism from British Jewish groups and the Israeli government.

The decision was taken during the party’s annual conference in Brighton on Sunday. Party leaders described Zionism as “an ethnonationalist political project” and reiterated their demand that Britain’s Labour government end all arms trade with Israel.

The Green Party, which secured 6% of the national vote in 2024, said the resolution reflects its commitment to human rights and opposition to what it views as discriminatory state policies. However, the Israeli government condemned the move, accusing the party of “legitimising terrorism.”

Deputy leaders Mothin Ali and Rachel Millward defended the resolution, arguing that it aligns with the party’s broader stance on international justice and equality. Critics, however, warned that the decision risks alienating Jewish voters and escalating tensions in Britain’s political landscape.

The vote adds to ongoing debates in Europe over the definition of Zionism, antisemitism, and the boundaries of legitimate political criticism of Israel.
