The government has announced that Aadhaar biometric authentication will be mandatory for subsidised domestic LPG refills starting October 1, 2026.

According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, the move aims to ensure that subsidies reach only genuine households, preventing diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial use. By linking each LPG connection to an Aadhaar‑verified consumer, the system will eliminate duplicate and ineligible connections, making subsidy delivery more transparent and targeted.

Officials clarified that the process is not intended to deny LPG access to any eligible household. Consumers can complete authentication easily at the time of delivery, at distributor showrooms, or through Oil Marketing Company (OMC) mobile apps.

The Ministry revealed that 27.43 crore consumers have already completed authentication and need not take further action. Those yet to complete the process are urged to do so before October 1 to continue receiving LPG at the regulated retail price with subsidy benefits.

This initiative reflects the government’s broader push for digital governance, ensuring efficiency and accountability in welfare delivery while safeguarding resources for deserving families.
