Actor Andrew Garfield says curiosity and fear drew him to Artificial, director Luca Guadagnino’s film about OpenAI and the people shaping the development of artificial intelligence. The film premiered at the London Film Festival on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Garfield portrays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the movie, which spans approximately two decades and follows the company’s origins and growth, including the dramatic events surrounding Altman’s dismissal and return in 2023.
Speaking about the role, Garfield said he wanted to understand the people leading society into a new phase of technological change. He also highlighted the importance of examining those who hold influence over the technologies increasingly shaping everyday life.
According to Garfield, the people leading major technology companies demonstrate imagination, resilience and the ability to withstand intense public scrutiny. At the same time, he argued that such scrutiny matters because the public needs to understand who holds power and who is helping shape the future.
Garfield did not contact or meet Altman while preparing for the role, according to the report.
The project also connects with Garfield’s earlier experience in a film about the technology industry. He appeared in The Social Network (2010), which dramatized the origins of Facebook.
With artificial intelligence becoming an increasingly prominent part of public debate, Artificial brings attention to the people behind the technology as well as the questions of leadership, accountability and influence surrounding its development.
