In a distressing development amid political tensions in New Delhi, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke remained in police detention on Saturday, October 10, 2026, following the death of his 85-year-old grandmother in Maharashtra.
Savitribai Shankar Dipke died in Santuk Pimpri village in Hingoli district, according to a report by The Indian Express. The news came hours after Abhijeet Dipke was detained by Delhi Police shortly after arriving at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Dipke had travelled from Mumbai with CJP spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to participate in a proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The protest was planned against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to the report, Dipke was detained inside his aircraft shortly after it landed in Delhi on Saturday morning. The police action took place amid restrictions surrounding the planned demonstration in the national capital.
Following Savitribai Dipke’s death, Abhijeet’s parents, Bhagwan and Anita Dipke, reportedly left for their native village after receiving the news.
However, uncertainty remained over whether the CJP founder would be released or permitted to travel to Maharashtra to attend his grandmother’s last rites. It was also unclear whether he had been informed about the family tragedy.
The situation has added a deeply personal dimension to the ongoing controversy surrounding the proposed protest and the detention of political activists.
Questions remain about the circumstances of his detention, the possibility of his release and whether he will be able to join his family during the final rites.
Further details regarding the police action and Dipke’s status were not immediately available in the report.
