Zoho founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu has responded to concerns over growing anti-India sentiment in the United States, saying India must focus on developing its own talent, building successful companies and strengthening its economy to earn greater global respect.
In a post on X on October 24, Vembu reacted to comments by American mathematician Eric Weinstein, who had highlighted what he described as growing hostility towards Indians, Hindus and Indian Americans.
Vembu argued that India's progress should not depend on the political ideology of governments in other countries. Instead, he called for a stronger focus on domestic innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development.
He said that when people question why talented Indians seek opportunities abroad if India has skilled professionals, the response should be to build the country's capabilities rather than react with hatred.
Vembu also acknowledged that some Indians may share pessimistic views about India's ability to develop. However, he said the answer should remain the same: invest in building companies and creating opportunities at home.
According to Vembu, both successful businesses and strong nations depend on people who believe progress is possible. He described building companies and strengthening India's economic foundations as an urgent national priority.
Weinstein's earlier comments had drawn attention to concerns about hostility towards Indian communities in the US, amid wider debates over immigration, employment and the H-1B visa programme.
The exchange highlights two connected issues: concerns about discrimination faced by Indian professionals abroad and the importance of creating more opportunities within India. Vembu's message places particular emphasis on domestic capability, entrepreneurship and long-term economic growth as a response to criticism.
