Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla are exploring a potential merger that could combine two of his biggest businesses under one corporate structure. According to the reported announcement, both companies have formed special committees to examine the proposal, although no agreement has been reached.
Speaking during a SpaceX earnings call, Musk said there were strong reasons to consider combining the companies, particularly because both are developing technologies related to artificial intelligence (AI). He also stressed that the final decision would depend on the committees’ recommendations and shareholder support.
The proposed merger could create a business spanning electric vehicles, energy storage, rockets, satellite communications and AI. Such a combination could allow the companies to explore shared technologies and coordinate investments across industries, although the potential benefits would need to be weighed against financial, operational and regulatory challenges.
The combined entity could be valued at approximately $3.5 trillion, based on the valuations cited in the report. If completed at that scale, the transaction would rank among the largest corporate mergers ever considered.
However, the proposal remains at an exploratory stage. Musk acknowledged that shareholder approval would be a key hurdle, and the companies would need to address the terms and structure of any agreement before moving forward.
For investors, the prospect raises questions about corporate governance, valuation, business priorities and how the companies’ existing operations would be integrated. Until the committees reach a decision and formal details are disclosed, the potential merger should be treated as a proposal rather than a confirmed transaction.
