Denish Das and Sibsankar Roy produced outstanding centuries to help Assam recover from a difficult start and post 373 against Punjab on the second day of their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 opening-round match at the New PCA Stadium on Monday.
Assam had been struggling at 23 for three when the pair came together after a challenging opening day affected by rain. However, improving conditions allowed the batters to settle in and rebuild the innings with a crucial 168-run partnership.
Denish Das scored a determined 103 off 186 deliveries, striking 15 boundaries. His century provided Assam with much-needed stability and helped shift the momentum after the early loss of wickets.
At the other end, Sibsankar Roy remained unbeaten on 143 from 295 balls. His patient innings included 20 fours and a six, as he anchored the visitors’ recovery and continued batting confidently against the Punjab attack.
The duo’s partnership transformed Assam’s position, taking the team from early trouble to a competitive total of 373. Their contrasting contributions combined resilience with controlled stroke play, giving the visitors a strong foundation after their shaky start.
Sarupam also made a valuable contribution with a half-century, further strengthening Assam’s innings.
For Punjab, Umesh was the standout bowler, claiming five wickets and providing crucial breakthroughs despite Assam’s recovery. His performance remained one of the key highlights of the bowling effort.
The second day’s play demonstrated Assam’s ability to respond under pressure. With Sibsankar still unbeaten at the close of the reported innings, the visitors had recovered impressively after losing three early wickets for just 23 runs.
