Prosenjit Chatterjee’s four-storey Kolkata home, named Utsab, reflects his deep connection with cinema and his love for the city. Designed and styled by the Bengali film actor himself, the property combines personal taste with a strong appreciation for filmmaking and cinematic history.
The house holds particular significance because of its connection to legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Chatterjee recalled that the building was close to being demolished when he purchased it. However, a conversation with Sandip Ray, Satyajit Ray’s son, changed his plans.
According to Chatterjee, Sandip Ray told him that his father had filmed the acclaimed movie Nayak in the house. Learning about this cinematic history made the actor reconsider the building’s future.
Chatterjee said he subsequently contacted his architect, who had spent a year or two working on the project, and informed him that he had decided not to demolish the property.
The decision reflects how the home became more than a residential space for the actor. Its connection with Nayak gave the building historical and emotional value, linking Chatterjee’s personal life with an important chapter of Indian cinema.
Utsab also showcases the actor’s interest in design and storytelling. The four-storey property brings together his identity as a performer and his attachment to Kolkata, a city closely associated with Bengali cinema and Satyajit Ray’s legacy.
For Chatterjee, preserving the house meant retaining a piece of film history rather than replacing it with a new structure.
